Who we are looking for
Partner with us on field trials
bAWARE is privately funded and independent. We test our tags in-house on captive and rehabilitation birds. What we cannot do alone is the step that matters most: a properly designed field study on wild birds, large enough to give statistically robust results.
Pre-series tags will be available in 2027. We are looking for partners worldwide, and leading conservation organisations have already expressed interest.
The trials have two equal aims
- Effectiveness: do warned birds avoid landing on dangerous power poles, and collide less often with power lines and wind turbines?
- Safety: does carrying the tag affect behaviour, breeding or survival?
How we measure success
We do not need another study counting dead birds under power lines. The field already knows these lines kill. Instead, every bAWARE tag logs its near misses: each time the alarm went off as the bird approached a live structure, and the bird got out of harm’s way instead of landing. With our scientific partners, we will translate these near misses into birds saved, using published mortality rates for the same pole types.
What we look for
- Raptors of common buzzard size or larger (from about 800 g), so the tag stays below 3% of body weight. Lighter versions follow as we miniaturise.
- A site with a known electrocution problem. Existing mortality monitoring is welcome, not required.
- Endangered species, where every bird saved counts, alongside a more common species for sample size
- A field team able to catch, tag and follow up birds
- A scientific partner for study design, ethics approval, monitoring and peer-reviewed publication
- A permitting environment where approval takes months, not years
What partners get
- Early access to pre-series tags at cost
- Full access to trial data, and co-authorship of publications
- Technical support from our engineering team throughout the trial
We also welcome grid operators and wind-energy developers looking for new ways to reduce electrocutions and collisions.
